At 5:30 p.m. Monday evening, some of Gainesville’s best-known community leaders filed into Emerson Alumni Hall. Old friends greeted one another as congratulations were exchanged. The much-anticipated Fierce Awards were under way for one reason: to honor female leaders in our community.
As a construction management firm, we at D.E. Scorpio Corporation recognize that the word “construction” may lead many to think of us as a group of men wearing hard hats and carrying blue prints around a job-site. When in reality, we find that much the day-to-day operation of D.E. Scorpio is carried out by a tremendous group of women.
Not only that, but Domenic Scorpio, our firm’s president, is raising three young daughters with his wife Holly, the co-founder and Art Director at D.E. Scorpio. All of this combined made sponsoring the 2017 Fierce Awards a little more special for everyone at D.E. Scorpio.
Early in the event, Domenic stood up to congratulate the award recipients and speak as to why taking part in this celebration to honor women has also been an honor for him.
“The Fierce Awards speak to me personally,” he said. “We’re raising three young ladies, but we really need help from the entire community to help them understand their roles and what it means to give back and to be contributing members of society.”
The 24 recipients of the awards were selected for their efforts over the past year to lead and advance our community in the greater Gainesville region. Some hold major positions in local businesses, some are directors for local non-profits helping to change lives, and some work with college students in our area to increase the impact of higher education and foster advancement in our community.
All have one thing in common; they dedicate their time to improving lives in the community, and by doing so, they’ve proven that women everywhere have it in them to be remarkable leaders – And that is truly what it means to be Fierce.
“All of the women that are being represented tonight are true role models to me,” Domenic said. “They’re true role models to our children.”
Domenic ended his introductory remarks by handing the microphone over to his three daughters.
“Thank you for all you do,” they said. “This evening is your evening. Embrace it and celebrate!”
There’s no doubt that the three of them will one day aim to be Fierce Women themselves.
We would like to thank the team at Business in Greater Gainesville Magazine for giving us the opportunity to sponsor this important event. We would also like to thank everyone who attended for making the night a great success.
