Powerful Campus Upgrades
Substation #2 Cable and Switchgear Replacement was a project for the University of Florida with the main objective to update the electrical utilities to several key buildings around campus. The existing cable and switches that have been in basements, underground vaults, and duct systems for 50 or more years were removed and replaced without interrupting power to the buildings they serve. In many of these areas, a new cabling duct was not an option. Therefore the existing electrical cables had to be removed to make way for the new ones.
This project improves the reliability of UF’s power distribution by replacing aging equipment and cable. Some of the buildings that received upgrades include Larsen Hall, Black Hall, Carr Hall, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Psychology, Stetson Medical, and Pharmacy. This project was also designed to increase safety for the individuals that maintain the electrical equipment on campus. The new equipment installed features the newest standard of arc-flash suppression and electronic fault current interruption, allowing the equipment to be operated in confined spaces with reduced risk.
Substation #2 Cable and Switchgear Replacement is different from other projects because the intent is not to visually improve a building or an area. The intent is to improve the functionality and safety of the electrical system serving multiple buildings. The work performed under this contract will be in place serving these buildings for generations.
