October is Careers in Construction Month!

The recession of 2008 took a drastic toll on each American and though we have since recovered, this left a dent in the success and talent recruitment of many prominent industries, construction being one of them. Years later, with more efficient building techniques, innovative technology, and a newfound focus on collaboration, the industry is finding power in change and increased levels of growth, and with an even higher demand for skilled labor.

Economists have predicted a 5% growth in the value of starting positions in trades for 2017, which indicates at least one positive trend in the success of this industry. However, filling the pipeline of skilled trade and craft professionals is undoubtedly one of the largest concerns for our industry, especially in states experiencing intense growth like Florida. This is why one of D.E. Scorpio Corporation’s primary strategic goals revolves around Workforce Development. As demand rises for modern infrastructure and the impacts of natural disasters combined with a growing economy, it is more vital than ever for us to focus on the training and development of the professionals taking on the future of construction.

Our Workforce Development mission is built upon the importance of each individual step in the education process from awareness to interest to skill building. Members of the D.E. Scorpio Team routinely align themselves with organizations and initiatives not only on a local level but those at the state and national as well performing the research and crafting the messages. Here in Gainesville, we are fortunate to have the extensive resources of the University of Florida School of Construction Management. Domenic Scorpio, President of the D.E. Scorpio Corporation, serves on the Executive Committee for the School and routinely participates in activities associated with furthering research and awareness for industry transformative events like Workforce Development. Most recently, the School of Construction Management partnered in a statewide consortium, the Construction Workforce Taskforce, to strengthen the voice and raise the awareness of the growing demand for a skilled workforce as it reaches unprecedented levels.

The D.E. Scorpio Corporation is also taking action. We know the first step to rebuilding the skilled worker base that the industry demands is to foster awareness and education. That is why we are starting where it counts: with the students. October is Careers in Construction Month. Throughout this month you will see us focusing on efforts to inform the next generation on the variety of opportunities afforded to those interested in pursuing a rewarding career in the construction industry. We are working in partnership with Santa Fe College’s technical trades programs creating outreach events at the Boys and Girls Club and local High Schools to promote the wide range of prospects that a trade career would provide. Throughout these events we will be highlighting the training programs that both prepare new tradesman and continue the education of current trade professionals.

D.E. Scorpio and its valued partners are dedicated to inspiring the next generation and providing the resources for them to succeed in any of the challenging, fast-paced, and rewarding positions in the construction field. Together we will not only solve a problem facing the industry but open doors for those looking for their place in the world to join the proud legacy of those who are building it.
